Puppy Chow...
Metro dog lovers were up in paws last week, after a missing chihuahu (Chica) in the Northland, was discovered lifeless in the street with gruesome injuries. Read the original Fox 4 story here. At that time, some frenzied and unfounded commentary was being thrown around. Such as, it was a "hate crime," and "They slit her throat, hit her in the head with a hammer, broke her back leg, drained all her blood out of her, and skinned her," as stated by Chica's owner. KC Animal Control apparently also classified the killing as intentional, and a criminal investigation was opened. I'm sure a man hunt was initiated to smoke out the no- good teenagers or weird goth couple around the block. Media sensationalism was abound! But alas, the truth will set you free...
Today, Fox 4 has reported that a veterinarian determined that poor Chica was not the victim of some ruthless human(s), but rather a casualty of her own kind. "They" wasn't a "they" afterall. Yes, it is likely that Chica was killed by a larger animal (probably another dog), in brief a moment of Darwinism at play (and another cautionary tale about one's bark being bigger than one's bite). So call off the National Guard, give that vet the $1500 in reward money, and let the PETAites go back to throwing paint on fur coats.
Case closed...or is it? Just to be safe (and as a proud jackalope papa), I'm going to keep a sharp eye out for a muscled, knife wielding, hammer carrying chupacabra in my neighbor, that probably isn't even here legally. I suggest you do the same...
